In one month, companies in Quebec will lose the opportunity to hire temporary foreign workers in 27 low-skilled jobs without having to show proof of efforts to hire Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Even with the recent announced restrictions on Low-Wage LMIA’s, it is still very feasible to hire foreign workers in areas where the unemployment rate is under 6%. In Québec this is everywhere except the metropolitan Montréal region! Restrictions on the number of foreign workers in low-wage positions per location (no more than 10%) and the 1-year work permit duration are still applicable, however.
In addition to the above, the list of professions eligible for the facilitated process (“traitement simplifié“) is expected to undergo major changes in its next scheduled revision on February 23rd. So act quickly if you are outside the CMM and need to renew work permits of your employees: after February 23 you may need to post the job for a minimum of 30 days and hire qualified Canadian citizens or permanent residents that apply.
Please contact us now to talk about your options for hiring in the LMIA Low-Wage stream. Yes, it is still possible!
